How a round robin works

In a round robin, every team plays every other team once. With an even number of teams, everyone plays each round and the season is one round shorter than the number of teams: 8 teams play 7 rounds. With an odd number, one team sits out each round, so 7 teams also take 7 rounds.

The total number of games is the number of teams times one less, divided by two. 10 teams play 45 games. For a weekly league, each round is one week. For a one-day event, play the rounds in order.

Round robins are the fairest way to rank teams, because nobody's record depends on a lucky draw. Many leagues play a round robin for the regular season, then seed a playoff bracket from the standings. Read the full guide to round robin scheduling, or grab a free printable playoff bracket.
